CULTURE NEWS

  • Maurice Johnson, an Augusta actor, will leave CBS's 'Beyond the Gates' and will be replaced in May by Keith Robinson as Dr. Ted Richardson. The soap is the first daytime drama with a majority (Black cast) on a Big Three network since 1999.  The Augusta Chronicle

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Georgia DOT will stop construction lane closures on interstates and major state routes leading to Augusta from April 2 to April 14 to help ease traffic during upcoming golf events. The agency will also send HERO and CHAMP units—drivers can dial 511 for road service.  NewsChannel 6
  • On Monday, the Georgia legislature passed House Bill 268 that directs schools to track troubling behavior and expand mental health services following the mass shooting at Apalachee High School—new rules allowing teens charged with terroristic acts to be tried as adults were added, and the bill now goes to Gov. SPORTS NEWS

  • The 89th Masters Tournament–set to run from April 7 to 13–will feature honorary starters Jack Nicklaus, Gary Player and Tom Watson hitting first shots on April 10. Coverage is set for ESPN, CBS and Paramount+ with live data available on the Masters App.  The Augusta Press
  • The Golf with Us Clinic on March 31 gave high school girls from Lakeside, Evans, Greenbrier, Harlem and Grovetown a chance to learn golf with stars Annika Sörenstam and Suzy Whaley. Participants practiced putting, chipping and swinging ahead of the ANWA competition—enhancing skills and building confidence for the future.  The Augusta Press
  • Augusta National Golf Club will host the 89th Masters Tournament from April 10 to April 13—players begin arriving on April 6 for practice rounds and pre-tournament events before the final green jacket ceremony, and defending champion Scottie Scheffler will compete as top golfers battle for the title.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • Today, Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans hosts the first practice round of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur as Masters-related events begin locally. The golf course was damaged by Hurricane Helene in September — extensive repairs have restored it for elite play.  NewsChannel 6
  • The Augusta GreenJackets will open their season on Friday, April 4 at 7:05 p.m. at SRP Park with a weekend series against the Columbia Fireflies featuring pre-game concerts, giveaways and fireworks, and fans must follow a clear bag and cashless policy (tickets start at about $10 with parking options costing $6 or less).  The Augusta Chronicle
