  • Crisp fall weather signals fair season in the Augusta area as several events kick off this month—Aiken’s Western Carolina State Fair runs Oct. 10 to Oct. 19 with new rides and shows and the Georgia-Carolina State Fair takes place at the Augusta Exchange Club Fairgrounds from Oct. 17 to Oct. 26. Columbia County Fall Fair, featuring a demolition derby and petting zoo, runs from Oct. 30 to Nov. 9.  Augusta Good News

CULTURE NEWS

  • Students at Paine College are preparing for their annual Christmas play — a festive production that will showcase a long-standing holiday tradition on campus.  WRDW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Four students from John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School have been honored in the National Merit Scholarship Program for outstanding PSAT performance. Annie Zhang was named a National Merit Semifinalist among the top 1% nationwide—while Colette Kriegal, Luka Armstrong and Anna Harwood earned Commended Scholar recognition among the top 50,000 students.  The Augusta Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Broad Street in Augusta will see more construction soon — drivers should prepare for delays. Local officials say the work will change traffic patterns, so residents are urged to plan ahead.  WRDW
  • Augusta Fire Department celebrated Recruit Class 25-04 at Augusta Technical College Friday morning (a ceremony marking the recruits' courage and commitment), including a moment when Wesley Brinson was pinned by his son. HEALTH NEWS

  • Bethel community church held a community health fair Saturday — more than 70 vendors, including 40 medical professionals, offered screenings to community members — as part of its health outreach.  WRDW
  • A local non-profit held an event in Augusta to raise breast cancer awareness for all ages—engaging community members with important health information.  WRDW
  • Health officials warned that Georgia's health care system could worsen if ACA subsidies lapse — many families may lose access to needed care. They stressed that without these subsidies, the system already under strain could face further challenges.  WRDW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia coach Kirby Smart said he was frustrated after not getting an explanation for a goal-line fumble call in the Auburn game — officials spent more than five minutes reviewing and ruled there was no touchdown. The Bulldogs later drove 88 yards in 12 plays and will face No. 4 Ole Miss on Oct. 18.  The Augusta Chronicle
