  • The Cumbee Center in Aiken County is expanding its free counseling, safety planning, legal advocacy and support groups for domestic violence and sexual abuse victims this October—an effort timed with Domestic Abuse Awareness Month to support survivors.  WRDW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Western Carolina State Fair runs Oct. 10th–19th in Aiken with new attractions like the Ring of Fire, and the Georgia Carolina State Fair in Augusta runs Oct. 17th–26th with livestock shows and cash prizes awarded to winners.  WRDW
  • Nell Campbell will appear on October 14th at Miller Theater in Augusta for a 50th anniversary screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show. She will answer questions and share behind-the-scenes insights—drawing on her memories as Columbia and celebrating the film's lasting impact.  Augusta Good News
  • The Augusta Mini Theatre celebrated 50 years by hosting a drive-thru birthday event while previewing its new 142-seat performance center that will open soon. Non-profit founder Tyrone Butler said the grand opening on Nov. 14 at 4 p.m. will include a ribbon-cutting and community walkthrough — marking a new chapter for the arts school.  WRDW

  • Colony Bank CEO Heath Fountain announced that nominations for the 2026 Colony Leadership Academy remain open until October 10—this year-long program for high school juniors offers weekend sessions with local professionals and the University of Georgia’s J.W. Fanning Institute for Leadership Development, along with scholarship opportunities and a history of graduating over 200 students since 2021.  Augusta CEO
  • Columbia County School District said yesterday after the funeral of Aiden Lee—who was bullied and killed himself—that it will continue to provide student supports with programs like youth suicide prevention and mental health services. Protesters gathered outside Harlem Middle School to demand stronger actions against bullying.  WRDW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Georgia Department of Labor officials said they are preparing for a surge in furloughed federal workers—who will soon seek unemployment assistance and other services—due to the ongoing government shutdown.  WRDW
  • Attorney General Alan Wilson led the 28th Silent Witness Ceremony at the South Carolina State Capitol Complex on Tuesday to honor 35 women and 11 men from across the state who lost their lives to domestic violence in 2024—among them local resident Tiffany Britt. Family and friends carried life-sized silhouettes with a bell rung for each to mark their loss and strengthen efforts to prevent future violence.  WRDW
  • City leaders say Augusta risks losing vital federal housing funds because the annual homelessness count was not sent to HUD before the deadline. Officials, nonprofits and HUD representatives will meet Wednesday to decide on next steps—an effort to secure services for families facing crisis— as the survey numbers keep rising.  WRDW

HEALTH NEWS

  • At a recent conference at the Georgia Aquarium, Augusta University and Wellstar Health System leaders discussed the evolving partnership—started on August 30—that aims to improve care and train new health professionals statewide.   • Kipp Madison from Evans earned an invitation to compete at Augusta National Golf Club on Sunday, April 5 at the 12th annual Drive, Chip and Putt National Finals. He, who won the Boys 12-13 National Champion title in 2024, is one of 80 junior golfers chosen after qualifying rounds held since May.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • Kipp Madison from Evans, a past winner at Drive, Chip & Putt, will return next year for the pre-Masters competition at Augusta National Golf Club. He is one of 80 junior golfers invited to the national finals held in April before the Masters Tournament.  WRDW
