  • The Salvation Army of Augusta faces a staffing shortage at its Center of Hope soup kitchen and asks local residents to volunteer daily from 3:30-6:30 p.m. while donating ready-to-serve meals to help serve nearly 200 meals to those in need.  WRDW
  • Applications for the Angel Tree and Empty Stocking Fund programs in Augusta are now open to ensure every child receives a Christmas gift—residents are urged to apply soon.  WRDW

BUSINESS NEWS

  • A new virtual golf facility called Back Nine Golf has opened on Davis Road and uses Full Swing simulator technology invested by PGA Tour players Kevin Kisner and Scott Brown—offering locals a chance to play famous courses virtually. The membership club gives round-the-clock access while non-members can book play during regular hours ahead of Masters week.  The Augusta Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Violinist JaVonne Jones and guitarist Willie Soul will perform soulful jazz & R&B on Oct. 12 at the Columbia County Library lobby with a cocktail hour at 6 p.m. before moving to Hardin Auditorium for a concert that will raise funds for breast cancer screening ahead of the Miracle Mile Walk on Oct. 18. Jones began in Richmond County’s strings program as a child and now wants to show that the violin can do more than play classical music.  Augusta Good News
  • Students gathered at Augusta University’s Summerville Campus on Sept. 12 for JagCon, where heroes, villains and fans enjoyed panels, trivia, workshops and a cosplay contest. Organizers said the event brought people together and will serve as a base for a lasting campus tradition—encouraging more local creativity next year.  Augusta CEO

  • Augusta University + Aiken Tech are planning job fairs this week to connect local job seekers with higher education opportunities.  WRDW
  • Savannah River Nuclear Solutions signed an MOU with University of South Carolina Aiken in downtown Aiken to boost IT and cybersecurity workforce training at the Savannah River Site—this agreement will offer students internships and practical learning to build a local talent pipeline.  Augusta CEO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Senator Raphael Warnock released a report that shows nearly $500 million in federal funds for hurricane recovery is still unpaid—$29 million of which is meant for Richmond County to cover disaster recovery costs. The report said counties had many unpaid bills for Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, leaving local officials waiting for the money.  WRDW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Wellstar Children’s Hospital of Georgia welcomed a new facility dog Monday—designed to bring comfort to pediatric patients. It will visit inpatient and outpatient units—offering support during care.  WRDW
  • Faculty researchers at Augusta University have formed a lipidomics group that has acquired a new mass spectrometer to study fats that affect health. The group will let scientists and students test samples in real time — speeding progress on treatments for heart, brain, and muscle conditions.  Augusta CEO
  • Doctors Hospital of Augusta chief nursing officer Jeffrey Harden has been named to Georgia Trend’s 40 Under 40 class for his leadership in guiding over 850 nurses and improving patient care. He also works with local nursing schools to help over 65 practicum students gain experience — a boost for our community health team.  Augusta CEO

SPORTS NEWS

  • Elías Pálsson, a sophomore from Iceland, is set to be the Jaguars' top outside shooter as the team prepares for its season opener on Nov. 1. Coach Metress said Pálsson's three-point shooting and focus on teamwork will boost the team—he expects him to play big minutes while managing preseason injuries—helping secure a Peach Belt Conference title.  The Bell Ringer
