COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The 33rd annual It’s Spooky to Be Hungry food drive runs throughout October to fight hunger in Augusta—community groups in schools, churches, and neighborhoods hold events while volunteers place door hangers with QR codes on Saturday. The food bank aims to raise $400,000 to provide one million meals and return to its regular schedule after last year’s hurricane relief efforts.  Augusta Good News
  • Paceline, the local nonprofit that supports cancer research, is helping walkers, runners and cyclists get ready for its yearly fundraising event—Pace Day—today by offering packet pick-up services.  The Augusta Press
  • The Augusta Duck Dash took place on Saturday at Savannah Rapids Pavilion to support the YMCA’s A Place to Dream program — which helps over 2,000 kids and newborns have safe sleep at Children’s Hospital of Georgia. More than 4,000 ducks were expected to be bought — organizers said the funds will boost support for the program.  WRDW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • A Riverside Elementary School second grader, Jordyn Norland, was honored on Friday morning—she called 911 during her mother's medical emergency and helped save her life. She was recognized by local officers and school officials at the Student of the Month event.  The Augusta Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A 2023 audit of the Augusta Land Bank Authority, released in August, found weak spending controls and oversight. Officials will review the report—hoping to improve financial management.  The Augusta Press
  • On Saturday, the Georgia Governor’s Office of Highway Safety hosted a mock crash simulation at the hub to show teens the dangers of distracted driving and the importance of wearing seatbelts—teens participated in the interactive event and learned key safety lessons.  WRDW

SPORTS NEWS

  • After losing the first set on Oct. 4 at Christenberry Fieldhouse, Augusta volleyball rallied to defeat Flagler by winning three straight sets with a 3-1 result and improved its record to 13-2 overall and 4-0 in Peach Belt play—showing strong serving and a balanced attack. The Jaguars will face Emmanuel University Tuesday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. in a game that supports cancer awareness.  The Bell Ringer
  • On Oct. 3, Thomson beat Burke County 24-14 for the first time since 2021 as Coach Michael Youngblood celebrated his birthday and praised a key run by Zay Brinson. The Bulldogs fought back from early mistakes and now plan to face Glenn Hills and Josey in upcoming games — a win that lifted their spirit — marking a turning point in a historic rivalry.  Augusta Good News
