CULTURE NEWS
- ➤ The Fall Greek Festival will take place this week in downtown Augusta at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 953 Telfair St.—the four-day event will offer traditional Greek food, dancing, and shopping with local vendors and is free to attend from Thursday through Sunday. - ➤ Drake White’s Artist(s) as Muse photo show is on display at the Morris Museum of Art through Jan. 4 and will have an artist talk with a reception on Oct. 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., while his new POEISIS show opens at CANDL on Oct. 3 with a reception. The museum will also offer a film screening Friday at noon, a free concert Sunday at 2 p.m., and current exhibits run until Feb. 8 and close on Oct. 12—events that give Augusta art fans plenty to enjoy. - ➤ Retired Richmond County educator Beverly Barnhart, who pioneered the magnet school program and founded John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School, died Sept. 15 at age 90. - ➤ Parents in Columbia County met Monday night for the first "Let's Talk" event of the school year to address bullying and student safety in schools—just days after the death of 11-year-old Aiden from Harlem Middle School. - ➤ A leaked memo from Colonel Anthony Kazor shows that Fort Gordon’s fire services are operating at a severe level with only nine firefighters on duty—well below the Army’s recommendation to cover nearly 40,000 employees and residents. - ➤ Between Sept. 22 and 26, inspectors in Augusta found Sarku Japanese scored 82—losing points for missing employee health agreements, improper food storage and poor hygiene—and Knuckle Sandwiches and Walton Rehabilitation Hospital scored 83 and 84 as inspectors noted lapses in food handling and safety practices.
