BUSINESS NEWS

  • Downtown Augusta businesses got an economic lift from Arts in the Heart and Ironman events—local shop owners said they are pleased with the boost.  WRDW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Fall Greek Festival will take place this week in downtown Augusta at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church at 953 Telfair St.—the four-day event will offer traditional Greek food, dancing, and shopping with local vendors and is free to attend from Thursday through Sunday. Church members are preparing dishes like spanakopita and souvlaki as part of the festival’s 35-year tradition.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • Drake White’s Artist(s) as Muse photo show is on display at the Morris Museum of Art through Jan. 4 and will have an artist talk with a reception on Oct. 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m., while his new POEISIS show opens at CANDL on Oct. 3 with a reception. The museum will also offer a film screening Friday at noon, a free concert Sunday at 2 p.m., and current exhibits run until Feb. 8 and close on Oct. 12—events that give Augusta art fans plenty to enjoy.  Augusta Good News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Retired Richmond County educator Beverly Barnhart, who pioneered the magnet school program and founded John S. Davidson Fine Arts Magnet School, died Sept. 15 at age 90. Friends, family and colleagues gathered on Sept. 28 at a theater bearing her name — they remembered her legacy in local education.  Augusta Good News
  • Parents in Columbia County met Monday night for the first "Let's Talk" event of the school year to address bullying and student safety in schools—just days after the death of 11-year-old Aiden from Harlem Middle School. Community members showed their support by printing memorial shirts, with proceeds going to the family and advice given for parents to check in regularly on their children.  WRDW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Augusta government is considering a special tax district to attract a multimillion-dollar pickleball complex with 48 courts and 18 tennis courts at a busy intersection. The Finance Committee will review the plan today at 1:15 p.m. — in commission chambers at City Hall.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • A leaked memo from Colonel Anthony Kazor shows that Fort Gordon’s fire services are operating at a severe level with only nine firefighters on duty—well below the Army’s recommendation to cover nearly 40,000 employees and residents. Leaders rely on mutual aid agreements with local fire departments to manage risks as a hiring freeze has created a shortfall of 14 firefighters.  WRDW

HEALTH NEWS

  • Between Sept. 22 and 26, inspectors in Augusta found Sarku Japanese scored 82—losing points for missing employee health agreements, improper food storage and poor hygiene—and Knuckle Sandwiches and Walton Rehabilitation Hospital scored 83 and 84 as inspectors noted lapses in food handling and safety practices. Several local schools, restaurants and hotels earned perfect 100 scores with no violations.  The Augusta Press
  • On Saturday, the Kroc Center gave free car seat safety checks to help parents ensure their children were properly buckled—an effort to boost safety awareness.  WRDW
