CULTURE NEWS

  • Arts in the Heart festival will be held downtown along Reynolds Street, Augusta Common and parts of the Savannah River from Friday, Sept. 19 through Sunday, Sept. 21. The event will offer food from about 20 countries including dishes from Jamaica, India and China — a diverse taste for locals.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • At her first show at Augusta Con, local artist Shamrick said her painting touched a grieving mother who lost her young daughter in a horrific accident downtown Wagener—she explained that the art brought comfort in a hard time. Shamrick will show her work at Arts in the Heart Sept. 19-21 and at the World Oddities Expo in Savannah while also working on comics and teaching art.  Augusta Good News

  • Peach State Health Plan awarded over $119,000 in scholarships to 74 Georgia scholars—ten receiving $10,000 and 64 getting $300 for dorm supplies as they begin college.  Augusta CEO
  • Augusta University marked Constitution Day in a campus-wide event where 60 representatives took turns reading the U.S. Constitution—students joined a Constitution-themed quiz and received help registering to vote before November's election.  WRDW

  • Jim Steed, a lifelong Columbia County farmer and president of the Farm Bureau, announced his campaign for District 2 county commissioner to guide smart growth and fiscal responsibility. He said his work as a planning commissioner will help him balance development with the county's agricultural heritage — his vision that may shape future policies.  WRDW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Georgia football won 44-41 in overtime against Tennessee after the defense allowed four long touchdown passes and coach Smart said the team must boost its pass coverage.
