EDUCATION NEWS

  • Augusta University President Russel Keen gave an update about leadership changes as the new academic year began under the theme We Are AU. He said the changes include new interim roles for Dr. Susan Davies and Dr. Amy Smith, a search for a research leader, and a strategic planning process set to start at the bicentennial in 2028—steps that aim to boost student success and enrollment.  The Bell Ringer

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • A federal district court upheld key parts of Georgia's Election Integrity Act — which stops outside groups from sending duplicate ballots — and rejected a challenge from activist groups, saying the safeguards help keep elections clear and fair. Secretary of State Raffensperger said the ruling shows Georgia's strong commitment to secure elections and follows the Department of Justice dropping its lawsuit.  Augusta CEO
  • The Savannah River Site welcomed 18 new nuclear operators who graduated from Augusta Tech’s Apprenticeship Program on September 10th. Thirteen of the graduates will join the K Area Complex team, four will work in Environmental Management, and one will join the Pit Production Facility at SRS—each filling critical roles for future operations.  Augusta CEO
  • In August, Georgia collected $2.41 billion in net tax revenues, which is $74.1 million more than August last year—individual income and sales taxes rose while corporate tax dropped. Motor fuel taxes increased and fees for vehicle tags and titles fell, and year-to-date net collections grew modestly.  Augusta CEO

HEALTH NEWS

  • North Augusta Mayor Briton Williams joined Georgia Cancer Center leaders at Boeckh Park on Monday morning to celebrate the launch of a project that installed free sunscreen dispensers along North Augusta’s Greenway. The Sun Safe program will expand to include 90 permanent stations, adding to five already set up along the Augusta Canal + aiming to reduce skin cancer risk through more accessible sun protection.  The Augusta Press
