CRIME NEWS

  • An Augusta man, Earl Demetrius Overton, pleaded guilty to bank fraud, aggravated identity theft, and firearm possession and was sentenced to 84 months in federal prison for stealing mail using USPS master keys—he must also pay a $2,000 fine plus $300 in special assessments and serve three years of supervised release with no parole.  WRDW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Augusta University opened its applications on Aug. 1 for the 2026-27 academic year and now requires SAT/ACT scores for first-year admission. Prospective Jaguars can apply now and send their scores later—key deadlines include Early Action on Oct. 31, scholarship review on Feb. 1, and final application on July 1.  Augusta CEO
  • On August 13, SRP Federal Credit Union awarded $3,500 in scholarships to the children of two team members for outstanding academics and community service. Presslie Stevens received the $2,500 Ed Templeton Scholarship for pharmaceutical science studies at the University of South Carolina—Emily Benton received the $1,000 Larry Pridemore Scholarship for allied health studies at the University of South Carolina Aiken.  Augusta CEO

HEALTH NEWS

  • Inspections of local restaurants (Aug. 15th–21st) showed that several venues earned perfect health scores while others received low marks due to issues like improper thawing and storage (raising concerns over food safety).  The Augusta Chronicle

  • Kyle Cartledge left Grovetown to become head coach at Greenbrier and faced his former team on Tuesday evening, where his team lost 8-2 after Grovetown scored seven runs in one inning.
