  • United Way of the CSRA kicked off its 2025 campaign on Aug. 22 at breakfast at First Baptist Church of Augusta, pledging to help 30,000 ALICE households by 2030. The nonprofit has expanded its programs and volunteer projects to support local families with food, rent and utility assistance after Hurricane Helene.  Augusta Good News
  • Richmond County Commissioners Jordan Johnson and Stacey Pulliam hosted a breakfast at Carrie Mays Park Saturday morning to meet local residents and talk about key issues and progress. They urged community members to contact local leaders and attend commission meetings—ensuring everyone stays informed and involved.  WRDW

CRIME NEWS

  • A late-night shooting occurred at a Hephzibah Waffle House on Talbot Drive when Layla Bennett—who had reported domestic violence involving Antoine Stokes two months ago—returned to her car and her boyfriend Jalen Thomas fired, killing Stokes, with Bennett in custody and Thomas at large.  The Augusta Press
  • The defendant in a murder case involving the death of a 22-year-old in Augusta from October 2024 was sentenced to life in prison without parole — plus 15 years.  WRDW

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Former district attorney Meg Heap was sworn in as U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Georgia at the federal courthouse in Augusta after being named by Attorney General Pam Bondi—she said she looks forward to working with law enforcement to improve public safety.  The Augusta Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • Paceline and Savannah River Brewing Co. held a Happy2Help Beer event on Saturday in Augusta to help fund the Georgia Cancer Center—organizers even dyed their hair strawberry blonde to match the new beer flavor. All proceeds from beer sales supported cancer research and the beer will soon be sold in local stores and restaurants.  WRDW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Tim Tebow and David Hodges announced their new ownership group that will bring professional hockey back to downtown Augusta—home games will begin in October at a rebuilt arena opening in the spring. Fans will soon be able to name the team online as the new East Coast Hockey League member prepares to offer family-friendly sports.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • Burke County beat Cross Creek 44-0 on Friday night in Augusta - Talon Heath scored twice and Rashad Carter added a score while the defense held Cross Creek scoreless. Burke County is 2-0 and will face Benedictine at home next Friday.  The Augusta Press
  • News 12 provided Under the Lights highlights — showing scores from week 0 high school football games featuring teams like North Augusta and Greenbrier — to local viewers on Friday. The show will air every Friday at 11.  WRDW
