CRIME NEWS

  • Five people were indicted in the killing of 28-year-old Kameron Mason at MacArthur Park Apartments after he confronted nonresidents trying to use the pool after hours—accused gang members linked to Extort Anybody now face charges including malice murder and felony murder.  WRDW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Augusta University's Medical College of Georgia will host MCG’s Got Talent on Saturday, Aug. 23 at the Grover C. Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre with an art show at 6 p.m. and a talent show at 7 p.m.—students, staff and faculty may apply by submitting a 20-second video with a flexible deadline and tickets cost $8 in advance and $10 at the door to benefit the Georgia Cancer Center.  Augusta CEO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Augusta Canal is being drained for repairs to a sewage line near the Kroc Center, so the waterway from Lake Olmstead Bulkhead to 13th Street is closed for several weeks—boat tours and water activities are canceled. The canal-side trail remains open for walking, running and cycling, and the Discovery Center continues to offer exhibits on the canal’s history.  Augusta Good News
  • Augusta county has a nearly $11M gap from unspent grant funds and high employee healthcare costs so officials are deciding whether to raise taxes or cut services next year. If taxes go up by one mill, an average home may pay about $90 more and business owners say the choice will hurt the local community.  WRDW

  • Hyundai Hope on Wheels will present a $400K Scholar Hope Grant to Dr. David Munn on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Wellstar Children’s Hospital—Munn leads efforts in pediatric immunotherapy to boost treatments for resistant brain tumors in children.  WRDW
