  • People for a Cause partnered with Ubara Coffee for a back-to-school supply drive held Saturday near Barton Chapel church—donations of school supplies and clothes were collected to help children in need.  WRDW
  • Today is National Thrift Store Day and it kicks off Thrift Store Week as local stores like Second Act Thrift Store, Goodwill, and Catholic Social Services offer special events that support community programs. Goodwill will host a Thrift Week Passport Challenge from Sunday through Saturday — letting shoppers collect stamps for a chance to win a $100 gift card while supporting job training and recycling efforts.  Augusta Good News

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A resident recounted surviving two major car accidents on Augusta roads—one in October 2024 when a 16-year-old ran a stop sign and T-boned a car and another recent collision at a stop sign—with GDOT data showing Augusta ranks second for car crashes with over 44,000 incidents since 2020.  The Bell Ringer
  • Two firefighters from Augusta were injured while battling a house fire on Walker Street on Friday—sources said.  WRDW

CULTURE NEWS

  • A special screening of The Phantom of the Opera will take place Sept. 25 at Sacred Heart Cultural Center at 7 p.m. with Marietta-based organist Ron Carter returning for his 22nd year to play live music—a costume contest during intermission will add extra fun and tickets cost between $20 and $60.  Augusta Good News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Augusta University held its Welcome Back Bash on Aug. 15 at Christenberry Fieldhouse where students cheered and danced to upbeat music—one baseball team's big entrance caused the backdrop to fall. AU staff said the event went well—plans for improved transportation and check-in are already in the works for next year.  The Bell Ringer

  • Candidate qualifying for District 4, Hephzibah, and Blythe elections will begin Monday in seven south Richmond County races — a few candidate names have already surfaced.  The Augusta Press
  • Senator Reverend Raphael Warnock visited three local pecan farmers in Wrens to discuss how tariffs have hurt exports and reduced sales to China. The farmers, including Jeb Barrow of Three Bees Pecan Farm, support trade with India to help recover lost demand — a move aimed at protecting Georgia farmers.  WRDW

  • The Augusta GreenJackets won 3—2 against the Cannon Ballers in Kannapolis on August 16th as pitchers Rayven Antonio and Grant Umberger led strong outings; the team now holds a seven-game win streak. The victory improved their season record and set up a challenging next game.  Augusta Good News
