EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Augusta University held its freshman convocation on Aug. 10 at the Maxwell Performing Arts Theatre where over 600 new students received their Class of 2029 pins from college deans—AU President Russell T. - ➤ On Monday, Augusta University began its fall semester with over 12,000 registered students and record enrollment expected for the 10th consecutive year—applications increased by 85% over five years and many new out-of-area students arrived. The campus also expanded with a new parking deck and a 150,000 square foot research facility as it aims to reach 16,000 students by 2030. WRDW

- ➤ Two candidates visited the CSRA on August 11 as they campaigned for statewide races in Georgia & South Carolina, where competition is heating up rapidly. WRDW
- ➤ Augusta commissioners are set to approve placing over $400 million in SPLOST 9 projects on the ballot to fund local infrastructure improvements. The ballot measure will let voters decide how the funds support city projects — a move that will shape future public works. WRDW
- ➤ The City of Augusta’s Administrator has invited the Augusta Commission and the Richmond County Legislative Delegation to join a meeting to discuss the Richmond County Correctional Institute—meeting details like the time and location have not been provided. City of Augusta

- ➤ Inspections from Aug. 4 to 8 found that Siya Ram Investments GA, LLC at 1050 Claussen Road earned a failing score of 68 because inspectors observed items placed in the employee handwashing sink and unsanitized surfaces (cream cheese on display was 53 degrees rather than kept at 41 degrees or lower). - ➤ Faculty at Augusta University’s Dental College were awarded nearly $2 million from the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research to study how gum disease is linked to metabolic dysfunction. Dr. Morandini and Dr. Ramos Jr. will use lab tests and mouse models (using high-fat diets) to examine inflammation and bone loss in hopes of finding early markers for better treatment.
