EDUCATION NEWS

  • Helms College will hold its Summer Graduation Ceremony on Saturday, August 9 at 11:00 a.m. at Warren Baptist Church (3203 Washington Road) in Augusta to honor 43 graduates from its School of Health Services and School of Hospitality, with Dr. Katrina Hutchins set to speak on leadership and career readiness.   • Georgia public schools saw chronic absenteeism drop to 19.5% during the 2024-2025 school year—four years of progress since a peak of 23.9% during the pandemic. State School Superintendent Richard Woods said efforts will continue to cut chronic absence by 50% over the next five years, aiming for every student to have full daily access to learning.  Augusta CEO

  • Augusta commissioners are weighing a property tax increase+using city reserves to cover a $10.9 million budget shortfall for 2025. Interim Finance Director Tim Schroer said rising costs+unexpected expenses led to the deficit and the commission will meet on Aug.12 to decide on the next steps.  The Augusta Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Dr. Chunhong Yan at Augusta University is testing a new prostate cancer treatment that repurposes FDA-approved drugs to help PARP inhibitors work in patients whose cancer cells lack HRR gene mutations & his team is using mouse models to assess safety. He expects to gather enough data in three to four years to launch a clinical trial while benefiting from key funding provided by Paceline.  Augusta CEO
  • The CDC reported that U.S. kindergartners’ vaccination rates fell from 93 percent to 92.1 percent and experts warn the drop may lead to measles outbreaks when children return to school. In Georgia, about 88 percent of children are vaccinated (experts say a rate of 95 to 96 percent is needed for herd immunity) as officials work to address rising measles concerns.  WRDW
