CRIME NEWS

  • On Sunday evening, a shooting in South Augusta on Meadowbrook Drive and near Deans Bridge Road left one teen dead and three others injured, and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office said officers are searching for suspects—some of whom have been detained while the area remains closed to traffic.  The Augusta Press
  • Aiken County Sheriff Marty Sawyer said that on June 25 a 10 year old girl named Lavinia Lowe was shot in the head at her home in Beech Island in a suspected gang related retaliation after an earlier killing, and six suspects including five teenagers were charged as he urged the community to help fight gang violence.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • On Saturday night, a Richmond County deputy escaped injury when an impaired driver crashed into her marked patrol unit on Broad Street—minor damage was reported to both vehicles—Melanie Day Clayton was arrested and charged with DUI, failure to yield and no proof of insurance.  NewsChannel 6
  • Donell Brown, a local YMCA employee and father, died Thursday morning, July 31 after suffering critical injuries in a DUI crash on Interstate 520—authorities arrested the 63-year-old woman who caused the crash on charges including DUI and reckless driving.  The Augusta Press

  • Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Rick Bragg will share his insights on southern storytelling at AU’s Summerville campus on August 22 at 7 p.m.—with local novelist Brian Panowich moderating—to inspire both students and community members while broadening the lecture series’ reach. The event, hosted by the AU National Writing Project, will provide a firsthand look at the art of storytelling in the South.  The Augusta Press

  • Augusta residents can register for curbside recycling as registration opened on August 1. Coastal Waste and Recycling will start weekly pick-ups on November 1 — registered residents will get a 95-gallon recycling cart and be charged a quarterly fee.  The Augusta Chronicle

  • A Martinez chicken restaurant in Augusta was docked after inspections from July 25 to August 1 found raw chicken juice on a flour container and blood on a slimy floor.  The Augusta Chronicle
