COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Friday, July 25, the Zay Day Foundation held its annual toy drive at the Children’s Hospital of Georgia to honor former patient Zaydan Wright who died in 2018 and to give toys to children in the hospital and at home+the summer drive replaced last year’s Christmas event that was cancelled due to hospital construction.  WRDW
  • Salvation Army and Farmhaus Burger have partnered this month to host a donation drive for school supplies needed by children at the Center of Hope shelter—items include bookbags, pencils, pens, notebooks, and markers. Donations can be dropped off at Farmhaus and the Salvation Army until the end of July.  NewsChannel 6

CRIME NEWS

  • On Friday, July 25th at 5:42 a.m. deputies from the Richmond County Sheriff's Office responded to a shooting at the corner of Parkway Drive and Kelly Street—deputies found a man with multiple gunshot wounds and transported him to a local hospital while investigators work the case.  NewsChannel 6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Richmond County Board of Education is inviting public input on superintendent candidates by asking residents to complete an online survey by August 5th. The board will choose between Dr. Malinda Cobb and Dr. Keith Simmons on August 12th — the survey is on the school district website.  NewsChannel 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Maxwell House Apartments released a statement on Friday that it is repairing elevators damaged by a July fire and offering temporary hotel rooms and daily mobility assistance to residents. City commissioners voted Tuesday to schedule a meeting on Aug. 5 when they will decide whether to revoke the building's business license based on ongoing safety concerns.  WRDW
  • Augusta Mayor Garnett Johnson unveiled his plan on Friday morning at 10 a.m. to boost economic development, recreation and tourism along the Savannah River. The proposal from SPLOST 9 allocates $3 million for marina renovations and $8 million for Riverwalk and boathouse improvements.  WRDW
  • Downtown Broad Street will see long-term lane closures between Eighth and Ninth streets starting Monday for construction on James Brown Linear Park, which will include demolition of the roadway center and closure of outer parking lanes while keeping one travel lane open. Overnight lane closures on I-20 from mile marker 201 to 202 are planned for Monday and Tuesday nights from 9 p.m. until 7 a.m.—motorists should expect delays and drive with caution.  WRDW
