  • Columbia County Parks, Recreation & Events will host the free Dancing with the Stars event on Saturday, Aug. 9, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Windsor Room in the Columbia County Performing Arts Center in Evans—participants 16 and older must register due to limited space.  The Augusta Press

  • Augusta deputies arrested Rodriquez Brown after he allegedly fired shots at a car carrying a baby near Peach Orchard Road and Woodward Avenue — investigators later recovered illegal drugs and an altered firearm from his vehicle.  WRDW

  • Local performer makes his directorial debut with the new stage drama 'On the Other Side of the Jordan' set to open soon at Maxwell Theatre — the play, written by local playwright Samuel Williams, centers on themes of faith, fatherhood, and family.  The Augusta Press

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Columbia County Chairman Doug Duncan announced he hopes to eliminate residential property taxes in the county—an initiative that could lead to changes in local government budgeting.  The Augusta Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University got an $8.5 million grant from the Leducq Foundation for cardiovascular research — the funds will help a study to improve treatments for peripheral artery disease.  The Augusta Press
  • Health inspectors reviewed restaurants from July 11 through 18 and gave two establishments low health scores — both had issues with refrigeration. Inspectors found moldy cheese at one location and a broken cooler at the other — managers plan to fix these problems soon.  The Augusta Chronicle
