CRIME NEWS

  • A 30-year-old woman was arrested by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office for allegedly carjacking a 2020 GMC Sierra and dragging a victim who broke his pelvis and ribs (incident at 3646 Wheeler Road in Augusta).  NewsChannel 6

  • Arts in the Heart of Augusta Festival will relocate to the Savannah River area from September 19-21, featuring music performances, craft shows, food booths & family activities on several stages.  Augusta CEO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Richmond County School System announced Friday that seven elementary schools earned awards for excellence in cursive writing as part of the inaugural John Hancock Award program—Bayvale, Belair, Goshen and McBean received the Ribbon of Distinction while Hephzibah, Lake Forest Hills and Richmond Hill earned the Proficiency Ribbon. The awards come as the state requires cursive instruction in grades 3 through 5 beginning the new school year and highlight teachers' efforts to preserve key writing skills.  NewsChannel 6

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Education Department announced it will release $1.3 billion in previously withheld grant money to support after-school and summer programs in low-performing schools and high-poverty areas. Local groups such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Augusta warned that programs may close if delays persist while legal challenges seek to free more funding.  WRDW
