ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • On Father's Day, Sgt. Darrell Grooms rescued 63-year-old Glenn Wright and his 30-year-old son from drowning at a boat ramp behind Augusta Regional Airport around 12:10 p.m.—he swam to shore with help from bystanders who tossed a ratchet strap and fishing net.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • Aiken County deputies are investigating the drowning death of 18-year-old Malakai Jarrett who, unable to swim, was found submerged in a home pool on the 200 block of Yaun Road in North Augusta on Wednesday—neighbors and EMS attempted CPR but he could not be revived.  WRDW

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Augusta Museum of History held a Juneteenth celebration on Saturday where visitors toured the museum and joined art projects to learn about local history—local artist AC Daniel taught how to make Edgefield face pots and explained the story of Dave, an enslaved potter who risked his life to learn to write. The event highlighted how over 6000 individuals in Richmond County were once enslaved.  WRDW
  • Corinna Rezzelle-Pennypacker recently returned to Augusta to join her mother Carol Rezzelle at Flowing Wells Theatre in Martinez—where they will launch an acting conservatory for all ages with weekly classes for homeschoolers from September to March—and she will direct a musical production opening July 17—an expansion of Enopion Theatre Company's legacy.  Augusta Good News
  • After more than 15 years away, Corinna Rezzelle-Pennypacker has returned to Augusta to join her mother Carol Rezzelle at Flowing Wells Theatre in Martinez to launch an acting conservatory for all ages + weekly classes for homeschoolers from September through March. She will also direct the Enopion production 'The Prince is Giving A Ball,' which opens July 17 after tickets went on sale June 17.  Augusta Good News
  • The Augusta Chronicle won several awards in the Georgia Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest on Friday, with staff earning honors in news photography, sports photography, and writing; the awards ceremony on Jekyll Island recognized Katie Goodale — who earned four honors — along with awards for Alexandra Koch, Miguel Legoas, and Abraham Kenmore.  The Augusta Chronicle

  • A new study by Emory researchers finds that four or more consecutive days at or above 95 degrees may increase the risk of premature births in the CSRA, and doctors advise pregnant women to stay cool+ drink plenty of water.  WRDW
