  • A new homeless survey shows that Augusta's homeless count nearly doubled from 643 in 2023 to 1,098 in early 2025 + children make up the largest group with 395 under age 18. Local nonprofits said Hurricane Helene likely contributed to the increase, and services like Golden Harvest Food Bank and Compass for Hope are facing higher demand.  WRDW

  • On Father's Day, Richmond County Sheriff's Office Sgt. Darrell Grooms rescued Glenn Wright, 63, and his son at a boat ramp behind Augusta Regional Airport after spotting the father flailing in the Savannah River at about 12:10 p.m.—bystanders threw a ratchet strap and fishing net that helped pull them to shore.  The Augusta Chronicle

  • Build the Band returns on Saturday at the Miller Theater starting at 7 p.m.—doors open at 6 p.m. Tickets range from $38.71 to $94.59 and the event will raise funds for Habitat for Humanity to finish homes on Hummingbird Lane and start a new project on Macon Avenue.  Augusta Good News

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Augusta Fire Department and Augusta Technical College are partnering to launch a five-term, 64-credit Fire and Emergency Services Occupation Associate of Applied Science Degree this fall at Augusta Tech—designed to certify graduates as Firefighter I, Firefighter II, EMT and Advanced EMT. The program combines classroom and hands-on training to build a new pipeline of skilled first responders for the community.  Augusta Good News
  • At Westside High School, students celebrated the end of the school year by joining the Prevention Patriots program, which partnered with Augusta University to deliver blue T-shirts and frozen treats as part of its effort to curb opioid abuse.
