  • Craig Scanlon became president and CEO of Club Car effective June 9, replacing retiring CEO Mark Wagner — and he returned to the company where he began his career in 1998. CRIME NEWS

  • A 58-year-old man faces charges for concealing a death after the body of 59-year-old Cindy E. Reese was found in a shallow grave under the 15th Street bridge near Riverwatch Parkway on May 20 at 5 p.m.—he was arrested on Wednesday by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.  WRDW

  • Pamplin College students led by Dr. Melissa DeVelvis placed two new Georgia historical markers—one honoring educator William Jefferson White at Harmony Baptist Church unveiled on May 8 and another celebrating Augusta’s oldest synagogue, Telfair Street Temple, unveiled on June 8 after months of research and community collaboration.  Augusta CEO

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The U.S. Army announced that Augusta’s Fort Eisenhower will revert to its original name as Fort Gordon — naming the base after Medal of Honor recipient Master Sgt. Gary I. Gordon instead of its past Confederate namesake — as part of a nationwide effort to remove Confederate ties from Army installations.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • Georgia lawmakers held their first House Study Committee meeting on the costs of smoking and listened to health advocates proposing to raise the cigarette tax to help cover Medicaid expenses — a move promoted amid federal cuts to tobacco prevention programs. Dr. Michelle Au is leading efforts with some GOP support to raise the tax to 57 cents per pack — a measure that could generate hundreds of millions if enacted in the future.  The Augusta Chronicle
