CRIME NEWS

  • The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a suspicious death that occurred Tuesday — authorities are looking for two women for questioning.  WRDW
  • On May 12, authorities reported that Chiquita Dawson, facing DUI and fentanyl possession charges, struck and killed pedestrian Taveon Wright on Windsor Spring Road then fled the scene—witnesses tracked her movement and led to her arrest, and she was charged with felony homicide by vehicle, hit and run, and driving without insurance—as investigations continue.  The Augusta Press

  • Steve Boyd will retire from full-time teaching at Augusta Prep after 47 years—he taught history, coached sports, and a reception in his honor is scheduled on May 21 at the teardrop on campus.  Augusta Good News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Tuesday’s Augusta Commission meeting will review 25 agenda items—zoning denials and a Trane contract—with most items on the consent agenda.  The Augusta Press
  • The Columbia County Planning Commission postponed a variance request for Parker’s Kitchen at the former Walgreens location on Washington Road — Bobby Jones Expy, delaying the review until officials provide further details.  The Augusta Press

HEALTH NEWS

  • Inspectors from the Georgia Department of Public Health checked restaurants in Richmond and Columbia counties between May 3 and 9 and awarded perfect scores to several Augusta establishments such as Domino's Pizza, Chick-Fil-A, and Starbucks/Kroger—while a Town Wings in Augusta nearly failed due to food storage issues. Local eateries that did not earn perfect scores received lower marks for concerns including temperature control and sanitation procedures.  The Augusta Chronicle
