  • At the 39th annual Jernigan Memorial Golf Tournament held May 5 at Woodside Plantation, 68 teams competed to raise $290,000 for Piedmont Augusta Foundation’s new colorectal cancer fund—meant to help cover imaging and lab costs before treatment. A pre-tournament party on May 4 drew 150 people—boosting auction proceeds by nearly $15,000 for early care needs.  Augusta Good News
  • Georgia will host eight Memorial Day events over a three-day weekend including an Augusta GreenJackets homestand running from May 20 to 25 that ends on Sunday with a remembrance service and fireworks—other events include a rodeo in Hiawassee, a jazz festival at Piedmont Park, a honey bee festival near Athens, commemorations at Fort Morris, pool games at F.D. CRIME NEWS

  • A 45-year-old woman, Shaquita Dawson, was charged in a fatal hit-and-run on Monday when her car struck and killed 24-year-old Taveon Wright at 2:45 p.m. on the 3500 block of Windsor Spring Road—she fled on foot, parked at Station 18 of the Augusta Fire Department, and was later apprehended and taken to Charles B.   • A routine traffic stop in Augusta on May 12 led to the arrest of 46-year-old Antonio Rodiquez Tyler—wanted for a November burglary—who was also linked to break-ins at a Chevron gas station and a Dollar General store on May 11.  The Augusta Press

  • AAA reports Georgia’s average for regular unleaded gasoline dropped to $2.88 per gallon—4 cents lower than a week ago, 11 cents lower than a month ago, and 53 cents lower than a year ago—with Augusta-Aiken remaining the least expensive metro area, while the national average hovers near $3.13 per gallon.  Augusta CEO

  • A lottery player in Appling won $80,000 playing Royal Jumbo Bucks on Saturday and has 180 days from the draw to claim the prize. Another player won $50,000 in the May 12 Powerball drawing.  WRDW

  • The State Bar of Georgia expressed condolences at the passing of former Richmond County State Court Judge Richard A. Slaby from Augusta at age 83 — he served on the court from 1997 until 2017, was chief judge in 2010, and held senior judge status until 2022.  The Augusta Chronicle
