  • Yesterday, the Exchange Club of Augusta honored nine seniors at the annual Youth of the Year Luncheon—recognizing their achievements in academics, community service and extracurricular activities—with Samuel Mirshak from Aquinas High School named overall winner who will advance to the district competition for a national prize.  NewsChannel 6

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Tiffany’s Eatery & Lounge in downtown Augusta is at risk of losing its alcohol license after Code Enforcement & the Richmond County Sheriff's Office found that the business served alcohol after allowed hours. The lounge requested permission for Sunday sales in November, but ongoing issues have been identified and no decision has been made.  Augusta CEO

  • Cinco de Mayo will be celebrated on May 5th with festive food and drinks that honor Mexico's win over French forces in 1862. Many in Augusta plan to try recipes for tacos & margaritas as they join the cultural celebration.  The Augusta Chronicle

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Georgia’s pre-kindergarten program saw its national ranking slip as enrollment dropped from 60% to 55%—about 70,000 children were enrolled and larger class sizes were a major issue. New state funding of $97 million has been allocated to boost teacher pay and reduce class sizes, though enrollment challenges persist.  Augusta CEO

  • The City of Augusta is working to update its zoning ordinance to tackle challenges and create new opportunities for a thriving city. Residents are invited to submit input that will help shape the future zoning code.  City of Augusta
  • 12 On Your Side Investigates sat in on eviction hearings in Richmond County to learn how higher rents of about $1,500 a month are making it harder for renters to keep their homes. Judge Shawn Merzlak ruled on cases with heavy fees, missed payments, and rental assistance needs (offering non-profit contacts) and advised renters to reply to court notices within seven days.  WRDW
