CRIME NEWS

  • Two Columbia County deputies were shot—Deputy Brandon Sikes died and Deputy Gavin White was injured—adding to several line-of-duty incidents this month.  WRDW

  • On Saturday at 6:24 p.m., deputies stopped a motorhome near the Belair Road exit on eastbound I-20 to serve a protective order and when driver Montgomery drew a modified AR pistol—resulting in the fatal shooting of Deputy Brandon Sikes and a critical gunshot wound to Deputy Gavin White—the vehicle was later found to contain ammunition, explosives, and sealed jars with an unknown liquid.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • An Augusta man—George Collie, 40—is accused of stabbing his family’s pit bull in the face three times and strangling it after an argument at their Barbara Road home Saturday; the dog survived and Collie was later held in custody.  The Augusta Press
  • A Columbia County sheriff’s deputy died and another was injured during a Saturday traffic stop on I-20 near Belair Road as authorities engaged suspect James Blake Montgomery — whose past assault charges were noted — while closing traffic for several hours.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • Columbia County Sheriff Clay Whittle said a Saturday stop on I-20 to serve a domestic violence restraining order turned deadly when suspect James Blake Montgomery opened fire—killing deputy Brandon Sikes and critically injuring deputy Gavin White—and items resembling pipe bomb parts were later found in Montgomery’s vehicle, with his death pending an autopsy.  The Augusta Press

  • Augusta area youth from the James Brown Academy of Musik Pupils will travel to New York for Amateur Night at the Apollo on May 14, where they will perform live with their own instruments as part of a competition. If they advance, they will return on June 11 with finals set for June 25 & the group is celebrating its 15th anniversary in June.  Augusta Good News
