CRIME NEWS

  • Tracy Waddell, a 61-year-old Edgefield man, was shot in the back of the head early Saturday in downtown Augusta during an apparent robbery attempt and remains in critical condition, while police arrested 28-year-old Da’mon Cole & 27-year-old Destiny Reeves on charges of aggravated assault, attempted armed robbery and firearm offenses.  WRDW
  • On Tuesday, law enforcement evacuated homes on Wylie Drive in south Augusta during an hour-long standoff with 33-year-old Mason Meeks—wanted on six warrants—who was found with a handgun in the residence that also housed two females who were released before he surrendered with his hands raised.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • An Augusta woman told Richmond County Sheriff’s Deputies that on April 18th, after meeting on Facebook, Terrance McClain came to her home on Lyman Street and raped her by force—he is charged and remains in jail.  NewsChannel 6
  • The Richmond County SWAT team dealt with an armed barricaded person at the intersection of Wylie Drive and Mike Padgett Highway yesterday before 3:30 p.m.—deputies closed the road to protect residents.  WRDW

CULTURE NEWS

  • Columbia County Parks, Recreation and Events has announced the second annual Tacos and Tequila event— an energetic celebration of Hispanic culture— scheduled for May 1 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Evans Towne Center Park. Local restaurants and mixologists will compete in a taco and margarita competition while guests enjoy live Mariachi music, Hispanic dance performances, and mechanical bull rides with free admission.  Augusta CEO
  • Colton Ballet Company will present Float at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 26th at the Imperial Theatre, a spring show that highlights the company’s dancers. The production features four new pieces choreographed by Caitlin Phibbs, Peter Powlus and Olivia Waldrop — guest performers from Alabama Ballet will also appear.  Augusta Good News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Free CPR classes began in Columbia County on Tuesday—anyone was able to sign up to learn life-saving skills.  WRDW
  • Construction began on Monday for the Kisner Foundation and Friends Center for Pediatric Behavioral Health and Wellness, which will bring together child psychiatry, neurology, and rehab services—offering new programs like an intensive outpatient service to help children avoid hospital stays. The center, funded with a $5.3 million donation from the Kisner Foundation, will work to save young lives in Augusta.  WRDW
