CULTURE NEWS

  • The second annual Mardi Gras parade took place Saturday downtown as locals enjoyed beads and music. Organizer Christina Watson said she started the event to bring a slice of New Orleans spirit to the community.  WRDW

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Jefferson County High School launched its peer mentorship program last week (+ connecting students with board games to boost social skills at the Honors Academy) and mentors expressed eagerness (+ to build a supportive community) as they strengthen face-to-face interactions.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • Families from 11 Richmond County schools gathered Saturday at Pine Hill Middle School for Parent University to join workshops and receive resources, including a safety presentation by the Sheriff’s office, to strengthen school-home connections.  WRDW
  • Saturday morning, Augusta Regional Airport hosted students from 51 local middle and high schools for an interactive science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) event that featured a small plane ride and hands-on learning labs.  WRDW

SPORTS NEWS

  • Senior Zamiyah Jenkins scored 26 points and added her 22nd double-double as the T.W. Josey Eagles defeated Sonoraville 64-41 in the AA state playoffs on Friday, Feb. 27 at their home court. The team will face the winner of Hart County and Westside on Tuesday, March 3.  Augusta Good News
