- ➤ Over the weekend, Richmond County deputies and partner agencies checked abandoned properties, conducted welfare checks, and transported about 26 people to shelters during freezing weather — including a missing 13-year-old — to protect vulnerable community members. WRDW
- ➤ Starting Thursday, downtown drivers will face road construction on Broad Street from 10th to 12th, with one lane open for traffic — meanwhile, Telfair Street between Fifth and Sixth will have no on-street parking during reinforced concrete installations expected to complete by mid-February. - ➤ Compass for Hope sheltered 20 homeless people in a local hotel last weekend during cold, wet weather. The organization will offer its usual service day Sunday and plans to provide hotel shelter again this upcoming weekend if donations allow. WRDW
EDUCATION NEWS
- ➤ Augusta Technical College Foundation has received a $15,000 grant from the Community Foundation for the Central Savannah River Area to expand its Empowering Futures Through Job Training program. - ➤ GDOT made major progress on plans for a rail service that would connect Savannah and Atlanta while potentially stopping in Augusta, as shown in the Fiscal 2025 report. The study completed key technical work and will focus next on route options in Fiscal 2026. WRDW

- ➤ Augusta-raised actor Quinton Aaron, known for his role in The Blind Side, was hospitalized on Monday, Jan. 26 and is fighting for his life at a local hospital (according to a GoFundMe page). WRDW
- ➤ The Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University approved human clinical trials using deep brain stimulation for early-stage Alzheimer’s patients. The trial will begin in January with six patients receiving daily 50-minute sessions over two years, while six controls follow standard care. Augusta Good News
