  • Girl Scouts gathered to reopen Camp Tanglewood Trail today after Helene; three local girls added new markers (and a map) to boost trail safety for visitors.  The Augusta Chronicle
  • On Jan. 10, local Girl Scouts kicked off their cookie season at Camp Tanglewood where residents sampled favorites and a new Exploremores cookie. Cookie sales will run through March 8 to support girls' learning and teamwork.  Augusta Good News
  • The Camp Tanglewood trail reopened Saturday in Grovetown after Hurricane Helene damaged the site — three local Girl Scouts updated the map and signs as part of their Silver Award project.  The Augusta Chronicle

CULTURE NEWS

  • Due to founder Tyrone Butler’s illness, Augusta Mini Theatre postponed performances on Jan. 17 and 18 while holding the ribbon cutting at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16. Ticket holders for the rescheduled shows will be contacted with further details.  Augusta Good News

  • Columbia County announced its school-level spelling bee winners and alternates ahead of the district competition on Thursday, Jan. 22—students named will compete to represent their schools.  The Augusta Press

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • University of Georgia researchers found that extreme heat makes monarch butterflies more vulnerable to a parasite that weakens milkweed’s protective effects. The study shows infection rates have more than tripled over two decades & researchers will continue examining how rising temperatures are hurting butterfly health.  The Augusta Chronicle

HEALTH NEWS

  • A recent health inspection conducted Jan. 2–9 rated Five Guys at 84 — officials noted lapses in handwashing and food safety protocols. The restaurant must address these issues to boost its score.  The Augusta Chronicle
